Richard Maidman

Obituary of Richard Edward Maidman

Rick passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at home on July 1, 2023. Rick is survived by his wife Nora, siblings David, Debi, Cathy & Sharon and their families.

Richard Edward Maidman was born on April 13, 1961 in Ajax, Ontario to William and Mildred Maidman. He was a brother to David, Debbie, Cathy and Sharon. In 1981 the wide open spaces beckoned to him and he followed the rest of his family west and moved to Calgary, Alberta.

It was here his passion for listening to music evolved and he began playing guitar and writing and singing songs. His catalogue of music can be found at and on his Youtube channel. He also hosted an online radio show featuring and promoting independent artists on and developed an audience as DJ Night Owl.

In 1989 while visiting his brother David he met a horse called Destiny and this inaugurated another of his lifelong passions of riding the trails on his horses - first Tinkerbell and later Dino.

It was while on a trail ride, singing around a campfire, that he met his wife Nora whom he married in June 1999. Together they made a life playing music and raising horses and caring for their pets on their acreage near Carseland. Rick loved to share his passion for horses and was very involved for many years with Opening Gaits Therapeutic Riding Association and giving lessons to anyone who was interested in learning how to ride and care for horses.

Although having no children of his own Rick loved his many nieces, nephews and their children. Many of them got their first experience on horseback at Rick and Nora’s place.

Rick worked for many years as a carpenter and he was always ready to share his skill and knowledge to anyone who needed his help. He regularly showed up and was eager to lend a hand.

Rick you will be sorely missed by all who knew you and there is a hole in our lives that will never be filled. May your trails be smooth and your music sweet.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 19, 2023 at the MPP Hall, Chestermere Community Centre, Chestermere, Alberta from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Rick's life was centred around animals and music. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the charity of your choice
